Build your own pigeon trap

Build your own pigeon trap

If you train your hunting dogs using live birds, but have trouble with the cost of pen raised quail and pheasant,
there is a solution — trap live pigeons for dog training.
Pigeons, or rock doves, are native to Europe and were brought here by settlers in the 1600s. They were domesticated birds that served as pets, food and occasionally for their homing skills as message carriers and racing birds. They are found across North America and have adapted to a wide variety of environments, from rural farm lots to city parks.
Since they are not native, pigeon trapping usually does not require any special permits or licenses from state agencies. However, it is always good to check with local authorities in case there are any special rules or local permits for nuisance trapping in your area.
Pigeon traps vary in size and material, but most feature a one-way entrance that prevents the bird from exiting the trap. Use an open mesh to allow other pigeons to see the bait and other birds inside trap. Pigeons are social birds and will fill a trap quickly if they see others feeding inside.
Here's a basic wire trap that can be built in about an hour. — mohamed muzammil

MATERIALS

Cage
  • poultry mesh or cage wire
  • (2) 10-foot x ½-inch PVC pipe
  • (8) ½-inch PVC 90 degree elbows
  • (4) ½-inch PVC tee joints
  • wire cutters
  • fencing wire, wire ties or zip ties
One-way Door
  • scrap aluminum arrows, or 3/8-inch wooden dowels (door), cut into 9-inch segments
  • ⅛-inch solid metal rod or bamboo skewer (hinge), 12 inches long
  • ⅜-inch PVC pipe (spacers), cut into ½-inch segments

ALL COOPED UP

  1. Build the cage frame with PVC piping, with rough dimensions about the size of a medium-sized suitcase (24"x12"x12"). If cage wire is stiff enough (10- to 14-gauge wire), you may omit the PVC frame.
  2. Secure wire panels to PVC frame using wire or zip ties.
  3. Create a one-way door using arrow shafts or dowels and metal rod/bamboo skewer for the hinge and 3⁄8-inch PVC spacers.
  4. Make a one-way entrance on PVC side of trap (8"x8").
  5. Create an access panel on top of cage, near the one-way door.
  6. Install one-way door on entrance, using wire or zip ties.

Trap pigeons

  • Place the trap where pigeons congregate, such as feeding spots. On roofs, leave the trap near roosting sites or watering areas (around air conditioners).
  • Spread feed around trap entrances and inside floor of the trap.
  • Leave a water bowl inside cage and check the trap every 24 to 48 hours.

  1. Wow SALEEM MUZAMMIL. After serving, as you state, carrying messages. Especially in times of war. Resulting in saving many lives. Feeding the starving through the centuries. They're to be used as live bait?
Perhaps they're not native to your country but many in your country would not want these birds used as 'live bait'
Please explain to me what exactly happens to a pigeon used as 'live bait' both physically & mentally.

    2. I have a back patio where my wife and I used to sit on summer evenings and where our grandkids played. Then our neighbors started feeding pigeons. Now the chairs and table are covered with pigeon crap and the stench is nauseating. Pigeons are filthy vermin and are not native to North America. They don't belong here and should be eradicated. Now someone will say people of European descent are also not native to North America, to which I would say, "So what? I don't crap all over other people's property!" Thanks for the trap idea. I'm going to build one, trap as many of these vile creatures as I can, kill them with my bare hands and dispose of their miserable carcasses in the garbage. Sounds pretty hateful, huh? I guess, but I'm kind to human beings. People are valuable and I would never refer to a person as "despicable" for wanting to rid their environment of a health hazard.

    3. really pigeons cant think like humans. they only act by instinct

    4. While at first glance a pigeon may not be thouht capable of "advanced thought" like a human, you have to consider that the animal rights types are in fact human and by comparison, pigeons may have comprable intellegence.

  2. What a despicable human being. Pigeons are beautiful intelligent animals who helped us win the second world war. Can this author be reported for animal cruelty? How low can you go using pigeons for live bait?

    1. Yes pigeons DID help us win multiple wars, but FERAL pigeons did not, FERAL pigeons breed out of control, are near impossible to properly train AND cause million upon millions in damages to any kind of structure with their highly acidic feaces. The good part about this trap is that you can be selective with what types of pigeon you end up killing, specifically here in the uk we have a HUGE amount of feral pigeons, but we also have wild native wood pigeons and specific breeds of pet pigeons which usually have identifying rings on their legs, those specific types of pigeon can be easily released perfectly unharmed.

  4. There are a few pigeons in my neighbourhood which have plastic twine wrapped round their feet, I hope this trap will help me to catch them so I can free them and hopefully save their feet, thank you.

The homing pigeons is a variety of domestic pigeon (Columba livia domestica) derived from the rock pigeon, selectively bred for its ability to find its way home over extremely long distances.

  6. I'm so happy to have found this post. I am not a fan of this particular bird and I'm happy to find a humane way to get rid if them before one if my large dogs were to eliminate them for me in a very inhumane way.

  7. well.... don't blame your dog for eliminating them in an
    "inhumane" way! lol!

they're not human or humane! They just are going to do what you allow them to do... and what needs to be done!

I had a dog who... who saw it fit to "harvest" any furry mammal that entered my yard.... except another dog.

(and this was a Labrador Retriever... not a pit bull or anything.)

And I was OK with his decision... because he wasn't fast enough or big enough to catch a deer!

  10. Clever design, but why use them as bait? Just eat the pigeons, they're delicious.

  11. Well you plant them on the ground and flush them when the dog finds the scent generally you dont shoot pigeons for retrieval just pointing and holding so I take a bird that most see as a pest from in town and take it to the country to be set free after 48 hours inconvenience

  14. These are an invasive species driving natives first to desperation and then to death as they eat up all the resources. We've gotten along fine with the native wildlife for decades until these flying rats arrived. Now they are driving the natives to kill our domestic animals out of desperation. I can't even feed our farm animals anymore because these pigeons are eating all their food. I'm sorry but they need to go.

  15. I need something to train my dogs with. With that being said it does no harm to the pigeon they just get flushed and fly back to the coop on there own. They get a safe place to live, food and water and I get a trained bird dog that rarely touches the pigeon.

    1. Are you local because I will be live trapping soon I have an old mall by my house and they roost there at nite and then come to my yard all day ,because no one will take responsibility to get rid of them there the people took a 100year lease on building and are not held accountable and make my yard look like crap and neighbors think I want them here,if I just want some one to take them or I can gas them legally cause they are not a native bird
